Communication Partner Information
Nothing is more important than the communication partner of someone who uses AAC being fully trained and enthusiastic to work with someone using a device. Think of how we teach our young children to talk. It is through modeling, encouragement, and patiently waiting them out to communicate. The same strategies go with someone using AAC. The only difference is the communication partner is new to the AAC language also. This is why it is so important that key partners get trained on the language systems, how to access vocabulary, and program messages when needed. The Speech-Language Pathologist can help lead the team on appropriate communication interactions for the student's communication abilities and appropriate prompting to help the student be as independent as possible. Below are websites and documents to help with training efficient communication partners.
