AAC Assessment Resources
Many assessments have been developed and are available online or for purchase by publishing companies to determine a students communication level, features needed in an AAC system and possible strategies to implement the device into the students natural environment. The following list is not an all encompassing list but are materials I have personally used and found beneficial.

Communication Matrix:
Online Scoring system for the Communication Matrix. Assesses communication abilities from 0 months to 2 years of age whether the student is non-verbal or using some gestures, picture symbol or verbal language.

Functional Communication Profile-Revised (FCP-R)
This profile is used evaluate students age 3 to Adult who have developmental (including ASD) and acquired delays.
This test yields an overall inventory of the individual's communication abilities, mode of communication (e.g., verbal, sign, nonverbal, augmentative), and degree of independence. Clients are assessed and rated in the major skills categories of communication through direct observation, teacher and caregiver reports and one on one testing. The FCP-R is appropriate for individuals who range between mild and profound deficits. Subtests include
Test of Aided Symbol Performance (TASP)
TASP helps assess symbolic skills quickly and easily for children and adults. Students must be able to point to pictures to administer this test. It provides a starting point for designing or selecting an appropriate AAC device page set. Basal and ceilings are established for each subtest to allow for quick administration time (10-20 minutes). Subtests include

According to the Spectronics website, "This evaluation was developed to help individuals, families and professionals determine the most appropriate technologies and communication strategies for students with complex communication needs." A student's communication partners are identified and goals established on where to increase the use of AAC systems. Multi-modality AAC systems and communication forms (signs, gestures, verbalizations) are documented and utilized.

AAC Profile
This assessment is an inexpensive evaluation for AAC skills sets. It scores Janice Light's Communicative Competencies (Operational, Linguistic, Social and Strategic) on 5 levels of skill sets from functional abilities to independent abilities. Communication Partner skills are also rated to help teams determine what training may be needed to assist with implementation of an AAC device.
